Greenhouse horticulture allows for high product yields per unit of surface area and year-round production in temperate climates, such as the Netherlands, by using e.g. smart greenhouses and hydroponics systems. However these greenhouses use high amounts of energy for heating and/or added lighting. Moreover hydroponics systems rely on the use of mineral fertilizers, which require fossil resources to produce and of which some may become scarce resources in the near future.
