In this project a consortium of educational institutes, companies from Ghana and the Netherlands investigated the feasibility of converting domestic waste water from the city of Tamaleh, Ghana to safe irrigation water and compost. One approach under investigation was the cultivation of floating plants (water lettuce) on the waste water. In this approach the water lettuce removed mayor nutrients from the waste water and its biomass was harvested and composted together with local carbon-rich waste streams. The compost was then investigated for its safe use as substrate / soil enhancer for local vegetable production. deBaai was involved halfway in the project to provide advice to the local investigators on the cultivation of water lettuce, nutrient supply and experimental setup.
